What the usage numbers mean

Usage shows each player's share of his team's work (snaps, carries and targets) over the last three weeks, with the season figure beside it.

How it works

A share is the player's carries, targets or snaps out of his team's total. Recent weeks next to the season show who is gaining work: a back with 55% of the carries lately against 40% on the season is taking over the job.

NFL: from Sleeper's weekly stats. Air share is his share of the team's air yards (how far its passes traveled downfield, caught or not); red-zone looks are carries and targets inside the 20; targets per snap stands in for a target rate, since routes run aren't published for free.

College: from CollegeFootballData. Targets aren't published, so we count them from the play-by-play text. College snap counts aren't free either, so shares of touches stand in.

Keep in mind

Three weeks is a small window: a blowout or an injury mid-game can bend it. In college, a pass whose receiver can't be matched counts for the team only.

When it updates

Four times a day, around 5:30 and 11:30 AM and PM Eastern; during a week in progress, the games already played count.
